In the Historic town Of Appleby, Westmorland, the Crown & Cushion sits in the lower cloisters of the town. The Norman Appleby Castle sits 500 yards up the hill from us, where you can enjoy long walks alongside the river, or for those dare to trek further; the Pennines. Tel 01783 51595

If you are looking for a little more exotic food with a kick. You can't go wrong with a sit down or take away meal from Ashiana. Located on bridge street in Appleby Tel 01783 53550

On the edge of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks beside the fishing River Eden, and surrounded by the dramatic and beautiful Northern Pennines, we would love to welcome you to our late 16th Century Royal Oak Inn, in the heritage medieval town of Appleby Tel 01783 51463

Blencathra is a mountain situated to the East of Keswick, and part of the Northern fells group. For many years Ordnance Survey listed Blencathra under the alternative name of Saddleback, which was coined in reference to the shape of the mountain when seen from the east. The guidebook author Alfred Wainwright popularised the use of the older, Cumbric name, which is now used almost exclusively.

The Ullswater Way is a 20 mile walking route that goes around the whole of Ullswater lake. You can do the walk in one go, or do a smaller section combined with a boat trip or bus ride. There are villages and eating places along this fairly low-level, easy to walk route, making it ideal for all ages.

Nothing prepares the head-down, rucksack-toting Pennine Wayfarer for the moment you reach High Cup Nick, in the Cumbrian North Pennines. Having trudged across the flat limestone outcrops, old mine shafts and swampy shake holes of High Cup Plain, suddenly you find yourself teetering on the edge of an abyss.

Family Adventures

Located between Windermere and Ambleside, Brockhole on Windermere is the perfect place for all the family. With a variety of outdoor (but covered) activities, an adventure playground, water sports, and boat hire, our grounds will entertain for days!

One of the most magical aspects of the lost castle is that it is set high above the ground, within the tree canopy. In the highest turrets, you can almost feel you are on the same level as the herons in the nearby treetop heronry. On the ground in the sandpit, you can feel close to the saplings that are trying to catch up with their giant neighbours.

Rheged is a gallery, café, cinema, shopping venue, workplace and creative space on the edge of the Northern Lakes. A place where friends, family and colleagues can share a meal, watch a film, hold a meeting, see an exhibition, buy a gift or catch up over coffee. A flexible space for getting together or enjoying time alone with a book or notepad; a place where stories are told, ideas are sparked and the Cumbrian landscape is a constant source of inspiration.

From tree-to-tree crossings, bouncy nets and all-terrain Segways we have all the adventure boxes ticked. Whether you’re a thrill seeker or after quality family fun, come and put a smile on your face, get the wind in your hair and make some memories that will last a lifetime.

Recently visited high moor cottage for the week with our little girl Luna and our dog BamBam. What a lovely week it was. The cottage is stunning and so peaceful. Sandra was so welcoming when we arrived and introduced our little girl to her horse and donkey in the field next to the cottage. She was  always happy to help with anything if needed too. Lots of wildlife, walking trails and just a short distance from Appleby town. If you have children I would definitely recommend a visit to south lakes safari zoo. The cottage was perfect for us. We will definitely be visiting again. x
